View Full Version : The big bang experiment - Will it cause the end of the universe?

I have mixed thoughts on this. While it will probably create tiny black holes, they should be harmless. But on the other hand, apparently they could be stuck in the earth and will, in 4 years time, kill us all. (The black hole could be the predicted death in 2012?)

What are your thoughts on this?

I also have mixed thoughts of this. I don't believe that we should be messing with such things, without knowing more about it. :S It makes me very nervous, and I don't like it. But, on the other hand, I know even less about the CERN experiment and such sciences, as I certainly am no physicist. But I really REALLY don't like the thought of doing such experiments. I mean, isn't it called the big BANG theory for a reason!? :S I don't like it, and wish we could stop it. Some things, in my opinion, are better left unknown. (Though I don't think this should trigger mass hysteria, either.) This is one of them. :)

They wanted to start today, right? But I've read that a group of scientists wanted to stop them. I don't even know how it continued - were they allowed to start today?
It's sooooo near to where I live :S

Well, I can't say much about it, because it's difficult for me to tell who is right or wrong. I've read several interviews with CERN people who have said that they are absolutely sure that there are no risks. But I have also read about opinions of other scientists. So, who do I believe?!? No idea...

EscapeGirl

Yeah, they started it today. :) But they haven't collided the protons yet, I don't think...not to the potentially dangerous extent... Just sent some down the tube. Here's an article about it:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080910/ap_on_sc/big_bang

I still don't like it. I don't think we should mess with such things. :S The scientific community (the ones who know the most about such things) can't even agree that it's safe. I really wish we could stop it.

i read about how people around the world have been protesting because who are scientists to decide the risk of ending the world. But i disagree i think if scientists can develop more research about our planet the more chance we have of survival

I myself have no concern about this. We as humans have been smashing things together sense time started. And the Big Bang Is just a theory. No need to worry. I watch the Discovery Channel! LOL.

someguy
09-11-2008, 12:23 AM
Well, I don't think they should be doing this.
Assuming that the black holes could be created from this experiement, why would scientists do this with that risk?
I mean, who cares about how our planet was created? It was billions and billions of years ago. We could be doing things more IMPORTANT, like discovering cures for cancers and other diseases.
It's kinda stupid if you ask me.

Uhm.. :hmm: Is that true? Because on april fools my city's newspaper did a joke exactly like this in the newspaper :haha:

i have mixed feelings too i mean i think its cool how they are discovering something but scared because what if it gets out of control! and then someone tries to help but he fails and we will all die!(sorry i watch too much doctor who :) )

I totally am with them. Why not discover how the planet was created? And black or worm holes swallowing the world? Nah, doesen't get me. :P

someguy
09-13-2008, 09:24 PM
I think finding out how the planet was created is just a big waste of time.

Hitman
09-13-2008, 09:27 PM
I must disagree. We're the first generation that has been offered a chance like that. And fortunately, we're that kind of generation that likes to explain everything. Why not explain how we got created?

someguy
09-13-2008, 09:33 PM
because it happened millions of years ago.
It's really not that interesting. And I can find a lot of people that agree with me.

Hitman
09-13-2008, 09:38 PM
Well, what can I say. When they publish the news, you and those people, don't read it then. :P

someguy
09-13-2008, 09:40 PM
I'm just saying, there are more important things.

Hitman
09-13-2008, 09:43 PM
Finding out how the planet got created, is quite important. Even if there are more important things, so what? It's not like they're wasting time.

someguy
09-13-2008, 10:22 PM
Finding out how the planet got created is important? How?

Hitman
09-13-2008, 11:22 PM
I couldn't really explain it to you, since you're not a "believer" but it is actually important . I mean, don't you really wanna find out how the planet got created?

EDIT: Anyway, it's not in the hands of either of us if they do the experiment or not, so let's just see what happens...

someguy
09-13-2008, 11:23 PM
No.

Hitman
09-13-2008, 11:24 PM
Then read my edit. ;)

I don't see the difference, before or after. Like I said, it's not on our hands so let's just see what happens...

Okay guys, I don't think you'll ever convince each other of your opinions, so let's just accept that you do have different opinions ;)

someguy

debating is fun though.

Exactly! That's what I meant when I said "it's not on our hands". But is it allowed if we debate but don't go out of topic?

Mistery
09-13-2008, 11:37 PM
Sure, it's allowed to debate as long as the discussions stay free of personal attacks and such :)
I just had the feeling that you both started to run around in circles :haha:

someguy

running around in circles.
I had to run rectangles around our soccer field four times at soccer. The equivelent of a mile.

For warm up.

No, not at all Mistery. At least, not me. I was just trying to express my opinion from a panda's perspective. :haha:

I like off topic.

But I'll stop. The last thing I need is a ban, with my record.

I have myself mixed feelings about that experiment.

I side with mistery.

Hitman

On the countrary, I fully approve the experiment! (Not that they're asking a panda or anything but still... :P) And I'm more than sure, that nothing can go wrong! :D

It makes you feel more safe. :P

Still I think that I cannot judge potential risks. I just hear from different sides, but have not enough expert knowledge to build my own opinion upon facts ;)

I thought you aliens had far more advanced technology than this we are building. :P

But, you're right. We DON'T have that much knowledge about these kind of things so let's just leave it into their hands...

This whole thing reminds me of that movie with Jonathan Silverman - 12:01 (http://scifi.about.com/od/slightlyobscurecinema/fr/1201review.htm), I hope our days aren't repeating :P

It's hard not to have mixed feelings about this... For one - there were already plenty of predictions about the apocalypses, none of which came true so far... However, there's Nibiru - a planet/comet that is supposedly going to hit Earth in 2012... and the Mayan calendar where it's written that the world is going to end in 2012 (but it's also interpreted as the year of changes, not necessary being the 'fatal' year)... And some scientists are saying that the particle accelerator is going to create small black holes which in four years will combine into one big black hole that will 'swallow' Earth (that's in the year 2012)... I don't know...it all sort of falls into place...

I'm not panicking yet :haha:, but I guess all I'm trying to say is something a lot of you said already - some things are not meant to be messed around with! If there were quite a few scientist trying to legally stop the experiment - maybe it would've been good to reconsider the whole thing. Call me narrow-minded but if there is even remote possibility of, let's say, 'damaging' the world as we know it - I for one would rather live without knowing how our planet was created

Don't get me wrong, I didn't say there is no need for research when there IS! All I'm saying is that I'm "pro" the experiment.

i'm on mixed thoughts about this because notradamus (french prophet dor those who dont know) says that the world will end in 2012 through fire and there r the 12 crystal skulls on the other hand there is only a 1 in a million chance of the black hole killing us

Mistery

Well, after a series of issues that CERN has experienced, the latest news say that they won't be able to continue with the experiment until Spring 2009.

Yeah I read that something broke, and they'd need two months to repair it.

On a sidenote, the temperature that the tube thing actually has to be for this experiement, is just so incredibly cold, I can't believe it!

I read that too. They said it's some kind of liquid Helium leak! :?
