View Full Version : Abbreviation Game
Eternal Becky
01-18-2007, 06:56 PM
The game goes like this:
Give an abbreviation and the next poster will give the full form of that abbreviation and submit another abbreviation as well. There are four kinds of abbreviations. Please take a look at the text below to know them properly. You can give any kind of them. There is no need to specify in your post which kind of abbreviation you have submitted.
Types of abbreviations:
There are four main kinds of abbreviations: shortenings, contractions, initialisms, and acronyms.
http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0121.gif Shortenings : Shortenings of words usually consist of the first few letters of the full form and are usually spelled with a final period when they are still regarded as abbreviations, for example, cont. = continued, in = inch.
http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0121.gif Contractions : Contractions are abbreviated forms in which letters from the middle of the full form have been omitted, for example, Dr. = doctor, St. = saint or street. Such forms are invariably followed by a period. Another kind of contraction is the type with an apostrophe marking the omission of letters: can't = cannot, didn't = did not, you've = you have.
http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0121.gif Initialisms : Initialisms are made up of the initial letters of words and are pronounced as separate letters: CIA (or C.I.A.), NYC, pm (or p.m.), U.S. (or US). Practice varies with regard to periods, with current usage increasingly in favor of omitting them, especially when the initialism consists entirely of capital letters.
http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0121.gif Acronyms : Acronyms are initialisms that have become words in their own right, or similar words formed from parts of several words. They are pronounced as words rather than as a series of letters, for example, UNICEF, and do not have periods. In many cases the acronym becomes the standard term and the full form is only used in explanatory contexts.
Rules.
http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0124.gif Please make sure that you don't post any inappropriate abbreviation.
http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0124.gif Once you make a guess please do not forget to post an abbreviation for the next poster.
I hope you all like the game and enjoy it http://www.smileyvillage.com/smilies/sign0201.gif

Well it could be Warner Bros.
(I have seen WB used as an abbrevation for welcome back and now I am confused cuz you said I should not wait for confirmation. If I just continue and then it turns out I am wrong, why should I continue posting my own abbrevation? I am sorry but I find that confusing :S)
Eternal Becky
10-28-2007, 11:46 AM
Yup there is actually a confusion. I am really sorry for that. I think whichever answer is given should be accepted since sometimes there are too many answers, for eg WB. It can be Warner Bros and Welcome Back.
Sorry once again  Lets just continue the game without confirming. I am extremely sorry for the confusion created
You can give an abbreviation Lilli.
